The African player has now deleted his profile from the social networking site to protect himself against any further or future outbursts.
Chelsea have released a statement in support of Mikel and feel that the racist comments should be investigated by the authorities.
“We’ve been made aware of racist tweets targeted at Mikel which are totally unacceptable, disgusting and abhorrent,” an official statement, published on The Telegraph reads.
”We’ve informed the police and support taking the strongest possible action.”
Mikel is the latest in a long line of football players to suffer racist abuse on Twitter.
