Jose Mourinho is confident that he has replaced the hole left in Chelsea’s midfield following Frank Lampard’s exit by signing Cesc Fabregas.
The Blues let their inspirational vice captain leave on a free transfer earlier this summer after 13 years at the club – in which time he became the west Londoners’ highest ever scorer.
‘Lamps’ has now moved on loan to Manchester City after signing for newly formed MLS side New York City FC – who will not be a competitive team until 2015 – leading some fans to question why a player still capable of playing for a top Premier League side has been allowed to leave.
Mourinho feels that in Fabregas – signed from Barcelona – Chelsea have the ideal man to replace their former hero both for the coming season and for the long-term:
“Frank is the history of the club, history nobody can forget.” He is quoted by the London Evening Standard.
“Fabregas is the future; history is history but the future is more important at the moment.
“My opinion, and the opinion of my players, is that Fabregas is the right player to occupy that central position in midfield.”
