Former Southend United boss Stewart Robson has told Sky Sports News that Ramires’ role in the Chelsea midfield is key to their success in the Premier League, and will be pivotal to beating Liverpool when the London club take on the Reds at Stamford Bridge this Sunday.

The Brazilian international has been ever-present for Chelsea this season, making 17 appearances in all competitions and contributing three goals. Robson believes Ramires provides the balance between attack and defence which is vital to the success of the Blues’ other midfielders.

“They [Chelsea] need the partnership between Ramires and Mikel to be successful,” Robson told reporters earlier today.

This season, Chelsea’s new 4-2-3-1 system with midfielders Juan Mata, Eden Hazard and Oscar in creative positions above John Obi Mikel and Ramires has allowed Di Matteo’s men to play eloquent football punctuated with eye-catching goals and exciting build-up play.

Mata and Hazard have been leading the Premier League assists table but Robson has pointed out Chelsea’s flair players would not be allowed such freedom to attack without the hard graft put in by the Brazilian in holding midfield.

“Chelsea have looked far more creative this season, which has been down to Mata, Hazard and Oscar.

“But Ramires has to play in that midfield. He's been outstanding and he is key to the midfield in terms of defending.”

Turning his attention to Sunday’s fixture, Robson believes Ramires will have to play well if Chelsea are to take all three points against Liverpool.

“The three behind the striker should run the game.

“But it’s all down to Ramires, if he plays well, Chelsea should win the game,” he added.
