Alvaro Morata was brought to Chelsea by Antonio Conte to fill the void left by Diego Costa.
The Italian manager had grown tired of Costa’s histrionics and decided to ruthlessly offload him despite Chelsea storming to the Premier League title the season before, bringing in Morata, who he trusted from his time at Juventus, as a more understated, professional and younger replacement.
The snag was that Morata had not carried an elite attack as first choice and the quiet former Real Madrid man struggled with the weight of expectation, which was exacerbated by the failures of other, more established players around him as Chelsea put up a pitful defence of their title and slipped into the Europa League places.
With Conte surely set to leave Stamford Bridge, it does not look good for Morata, and rumours have linked Gonzalo Higuain with a reunion with Maurizio Sarri at Stamford Bridge.
So, we asked Chelsea fans whether Higuain represents an upgrade on Morata and, perhaps surprisingly, 53 per cent said that the man valued at £54m by Transfermarkt is not a better hitman than the Spaniard…
