Spain’s midfield talent is such that players who would walk into the England engine room such as Cesc Fabregas and Juan Mata are not in their 23-man party for the World Cup in Russia next month.
They have underperformed at the last two major tournaments but the Spanish are still exceptionally strong in the centre of the pitch, where the best of their talent is assembled, including Andres Iniesta, Sergio Busquets and David Silva.
Fabregas endured and up and down season at Stamford Bridge as the Blues failed to qualify for the Champions League and that has seen the likes of one-time reported Chelsea target Saul overtake him in the pecking order for the national team.
