The English perception of other countries’ World Cup squads is always amusing to observe; in many cases the announcement of the 23-man party is the only attention football fans in this country has paid to that particular group of players since the last major tournament two years earlier but that doesn’t stop the opinions pouring in.

The announcements are always seen from an English perspective and so it proved in the case of Spain when two left-sided defenders from London rivals enjoyed contrasting fortunes when their party for Russia was revealed.

Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso, who has been one of the Blues’ most impressive performers in the two years he has spent at Stamford Bridge, was not included, while Arsenal’s Nacho Monreal, who is seen as a little lightweight and flimsy in this country, got in.
