With the Premier League celebrating its 25-year anniversary this season, Football FanCast posed an interesting question to our readers earlier this week – who is the greatest centre-back in Premier League history?
There are many contenders for such a crown but we whittled it down to a shortlist of five; Manchester United’s multi-title-winning duo Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, Arsenal Invincible Sol Campbell, Manchester City skipper Vincent Kompany and Chelsea’s legendary former captain John Terry.
Well, the results of our poll are now in and it was the latter who won by a majority vote of 51%, with Red Devils pairing Ferdinand and Vidic ranking second and third respectively.
That’s perhaps a consequence of Terry’s sheer longevity in the top flight, but it’s also potentially because he was such an exceptionally well-rounded player in his hay day; capable of distributing with both feet, aerially imperious in both boxes and an absolute master of defending at the near post.
