Chelsea defender Davide Zappacosta started Italy’s 1-1 friendly draw with the Netherlands on Monday night, and Blues fans were quick to take to Twitter to have their say on the performance from the 25-year-old, who is rated at £18m by Transfermarkt, with many wanting the club to sell him this summer.
The west London outfit, whose fans would prefer to keep Alvaro Morata over signing a £36m striker target, only bought the right-sided player – who can play as a full-back, wing-back or even as a winger – from Torino last August, but he struggled to make much of an impact in his debut campaign at Stamford Bridge despite making 38 appearances in all competitions – the majority of which came from the substitutes’ bench.
The Italian often came under severe criticism from his own supporters on Twitter following his below-par displays, and he found himself behind Victor Moses in the pecking order towards the end of the 2017/18 campaign when the Nigeria international had returned from injury.
Meanwhile, the Blues are looking increasingly likely to sack Antonio Conte and bring in a new manager this summer, with the unattached Laurent Blanc reported to be one of the frontrunners for the job.
We asked Chelsea fans to vote on our poll to see whether they thought Zappacosta would thrive or not under Blanc next season if he did take charge, and a huge 65% said he would struggle.
The west London outfit may well look to add a new first-choice right-back/wing-back to their squad this summer following a miserable defence of their Premier League crown, and the 25-year-old could be one of the first names through the exit door if that is the case.
