Reports in Italy claim Chelsea could steal Jorginho from under Manchester City’s noses, and he would be the perfect signing to put them back amongst the big boys.
According to Sport Italia (via Football Italia), Chelsea could “snatch” Jorginho as part of the deal to bring Maurizio Sarri to Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea are in chaos at the moment, as it seems absolutely no one knows what will happen with Antonio Conte, Sarri or any incoming transfers.
However, Italian TV channel Sport Italia claims the Blues could use a mega money swoop for Jorginho to work around Sarri’s release clause.
According to the report, Manchester City have offered Napoli €55m (£48.6m), but Chelsea could kill two birds with one stone by paying at least €60m (£53m), and Napoli would then release Sarri so the pair could work together at Stamford Bridge.
Pep Guardiola wants to bring the crafty Italian in to reinforce his midfield, but if the Blues could swoop and steal him it would put them firmly back in the title race.
Jorginho has been one of the best midfielders in the world in the last two seasons, dictating the tempo for Sarri’s free flowing Napoli side and proving himself as one of Europe’s elite passers.
The 26 year-old averaged an incredible 97 passes per game in 33 Serie A appearances last season, while boasting an impressive 90 per cent pass success rate.
His calmness and composure on the ball allows him time to always seek progressive passes, something fans will love as they yearn for more attacking impetus from the Blues. He averaged 1.5 key passes per game and 2.3 successful long balls per game last season, so his knack for keeping possession certainly doesn’t deter him from seeking dangerous, forward balls.
He is also surprisingly strong and tenacious for his size, averaging two tackles and 1.5 interceptions per game. The interceptions numbers are hardly a surprise for a player so adept at reading the game though.
All in all, if Chelsea are seeking a smart, tenacious and supremely gifted midfielder to partner N’Golo Kante then look no further than Jorginho. It would be the perfect pairing for Sarri, as they would break up loads of attacks before quickly firing the ball forward for Chelsea counters.
The one weakness could be a lack of height in the middle of the park, but the mixture of energy and ability in that midfield would put the Blues right back up there in the title race.
