Chelsea‘s Branislav Ivanovic’s sixth goal of the season against Burnley at Stamford Bridge on Saturday means that he is now just one goal away from equalling Fernando Torres’s Premier League record for the Blues.
Such a statistic would not be that remarkable were it not for the fact that Ivanovic is a defender by trade, while Torres is supposed to be an out-and-out, goalscoring striker.
Such an eye-opening comparison highlights just how torrid Torres’s time at the West London club was, as well as the importance of Ivanovic to the Blues. The Serbian’s goal over the weekend was remarkably his fourth in his last six matches, having also netted against Liverpool, Aston Villa and Paris Saint-Germain.
Meanwhile, Torres is enjoying something of a renaissance on loan at his boyhood club Atletico Madrid, although his hapless three-and-a-half years at Stamford Bridge are probably still painfully fresh in his mind.
As for Ivanovic, if he continues this goalscoring run there’ll soon be calls for him to start every game up front.
