Amid a footballing world caught up in the growing trend of adventurous full-backs, the Mattress Makers' No.3 is a throw-back to more defensive traditions, boasting an incredible average of 4.1 tackles per match this season.
And of course, interest in the 28 year-old comes off the back of a sensational campaign for Atletico, which saw the Vincente Calderon outfit claim the Spanish title and reach a Champions League final.
Determined to make his Blues outfit into even more formidable Premier League title contenders however, it's unlikely the Brazilian will be Jose Mourinho's final acquisition of the summer.

Filipe Luis could soon find himself joined at Stamford Bridge by Atletico Madrid team-mate and fellow Chelsea target Koke.
The 22 year-old has set La Liga alight this season as the Mattress Makers' staged a surprise coup for the Spanish title, claiming six goals and thirteen assists in 36 league outings.
Capable of adopting virtually any role in the middle of the park - he's been used in five different midfield capacities at Vincente Calderon this season - whilst boasting a mixture of industriousness, mobility and quality on the ball, the eight-cap Spain international would certainly be an impressive addition to Blues' roster.
He comes with a rather steep €60million release clause, but having already been labelled as Xavi's successor for La Roja by the Barcelona playmaker himself, evidence thus far suggests Koke is worth every penny.
Most importantly for Chelsea, the versatile playmaker has flourished under Diego Simeone at Atletico, a manager who shares Jose Mourinho's counter-attacking philosophy.

DIEGO COSTA
Likewise, Chelsea appear to have all-but-officially-confirmed their well-documented £32million swoop for Diego Costa, with Jose Mourinho revealing his 'total confidence' in the west Londoners acquiring the Atletico Madrid star this summer.
The Spain international certainly meets the Blues' desperate requirement for a dependable goal scorer, with his 36 goals in all competitions firing the Vincente Calderon outfit to a La Liga title and Champions League final.
Furthermore, measuring in at 6 foot 2 and famed for his aggressive, hard-working style, the 25 year-old is an ideal fit for Chelsea's customary lone striking role, sharing many similarities with Stamford Bridge legend Didier Drogba.
It now appears just a matter of time before Costa officially joins the Chelsea ranks, but his switch to the Premier League could resultantly see Romelu Lukaku move the other way on a two-year loan deal.

TONI KROOS
Despite the signing of Cesc Fabregas, the Daily Star report that Chelsea will attempt to trump Manchester United and Real Madrid in their pursuit of Bayern Munich's Toni Kroos this summer.
Having amassed three Bundesliga titles, a Champions League title and 45 caps for Germany at just 24 years of age, the Bavarians star is widely regarded as one of world football's most impressive young midfielders.
Kroos' rather unique style, having begun his career as an attacking midfielder but improved the tactical and physical sides of his game to adopt deeper, more influential roles, would certainly suit Chelsea's brand of robust, well-organised football.
Furthermore, the Mannshaft playmaker's contract situation is no secret, with his current deal set to expire in 2015 and negotiations regarding an extension reportedly breaking down over the issue of wages.
The Star believe Jose Mourinho will offer a £7million-per year contract to bring the £20million-rated midfielder to Stamford Bridge.

MARIO MANDZUKIC
Another Bayern Munich star known to have caught Chelsea's transfer attention is centre-forward Mario Mandzukic.
The Croatia international has been in strong form since joining the Allianz Arena ranks from Wolfsburg in summer 2012, claiming 48 goals in 88 appearances for the Bavarians and helping them claim back-to-back Bundesliga titles, as well as last term's Champions League.
But with FCB already announcing the bosman arrival of Robert Lewandowski this summer, a striker nearly three years Mandzukic's junior, the 28 year-old is well aware starting opportunities will be scarce in the German capital next season.
His hard-working, playmaking centre-forward style would certainly suit the Blues' customary lone striking role, and the British tabloids expect him to leave the Bundesliga champions for around £20million this summer.
But the west Londoners aren't Mandzukic's only suitors; he's been linked to Arsenal, Monaco and Galatasaray to name a few.

RAPHAEL VARANE
Jose Mourinho has made no secret of his adoration for Real Madrid starlet Raphael Varane, even recently dubbing the Frenchman 'the best young defender in the world'.
Indeed, the 21 year-old has shown sensational progress since the Chelsea gaffer brought him to the Bernabeu in summer 2011, going on to feature in several El Clasicos and vital Champions League nights since, including this season's European final.
Boasting a powerful 6 foot 3 frame but eloquent on the ball and renowned for his exceptional reading of the game, the seven-cap France centre-back appears to be the total package. It's believed Mourinho is eyeing him as an eventual successor to Blues captain John Terry.
But prizing Varane away from the Spanish capital this summer will be a difficult task - he's already been anointed into Los Blancos' best ever foreign XI by Marca magazine, suggesting anything less than a world-record fee would cause a small riot amongst the Real fanbase.

JOSE CALLEJON
According to the Express, Napoli are yet to receive a formal offer for Jose Callejon, but the winger is known to have caught the transfer interest of Chelsea and Manchester City.
Jose Mourinho knows the 27 year-old well from their two terms spent together at the Bernabeu, where he found an impressive 20 goals in 72 appearances for Real Madrid.
The Spaniard has produced even better attacking output since moving to the Italian top flight last summer, claiming 15 goals and six assists in his debut Serie A campaign. He also won this season's Coppa Italia with the Naples side.
Capable of playing on either flank, as a no.10 or even an out-and-out striker, Callejon would certainly provide added depth and competition to the Stamford Bridge roster, whilst a current average of 1.5 tackles per match suggests he's well accustomed to Mourinho's industrious mentality.
Napoli reportedly rate the winger at around £24million, but thus far that price-tag is proving too rich for Chelsea's blood.
