Manchester City’s deal to sign Jorginho is not yet finalised and Chelsea have hopes of gatecrashing the move, according to the Manchester Evening News.
The MEN report that while Jorginho has been left out of Napoli’s pre-season training plans and despite the fact they have signed a replacement in Fabian Luiz, his move to the Etihad Stadium is not yet finalised.
They say that City value the Italian at around £35m, while Napoli feel £53m is fairer and that a £48m compromise deal is not complete, which has given Chelsea the opportunity to swoop, especially if they appoint Maurizio Sarri as their new manager.
The report also says that while Pep Guardiola is content to be patient so as not to overpay for his summer targets, Napoli are keen to maximise profit on the sale of the playmaker, which could offer Chelsea encouragement.
Tiemoue Bakayoko was brought in against Antonio Conte’s wishes to be part of Chelsea’s first-choice central midfield last season, but Jorginho is of such quality that he should be able to take that starting place.
Further, if Chelsea need to raise funds for a £53m transfer swoop without Champions League money, a young, hungry midfielder with years left on his contract who could be a success in another league given time may be among the top choices to depart in order to do so.
