This afternoon saw new Chelsea boss Antonio Conte unveiled to the British press for the first time.
This was, for many fans, the first opportunity to see the new boss in action, as he provided an insight into what he has prepared going into his first year in charge of The Blues.
Whilst he didn’t produce anything quotable quite on a level of Jose Mourinho, there were some key takeaways from the press conference that will the press will no doubt come back to during the course of his spell in charge of The Blues.
Here are 1o of the BEST quotes pulled straight from Antonio Conte’s first Chelsea press conference…
“A great pleasure. I’m very happy. I will work hard to stay here”
Conte is pleased to be at the club, and if he has his way he will be here for a long time.
A great way to start.
“I think this league is…the most difficult in the world. Six or seven teams can win the title”
He knows the challenge that awaits him, but he will relish it.
“I saw the players with the right attitude and behaviour. A great will to fight for the shirt”
Above all else – Conte rates passion and determination on the pitch.
“John Terry has a contract as a player. He is the captain”
John Terry will remain a key part of the Chelsea first team next year; and will continue as the club captain.
“All the decisions we took together. Me and the club”
Chelsea and Conte both made the decision to hold onto John Terry, and that will be the approach going forward.
“Players will play when they deserve”
Form is everything – a player’s history does not matter.
“The pressure for me is not important. I was born with pressure”
A much better comment than talking about Bird Flu.
“In Italy I liked to say the manager is like a tailor. You have to best dress the team.”
A fantastic quote. The formation must fit the players; the players must not change to fit a formation.
“Three at the back? Four at the back? It is not important for us. What is important is the right spirit of the team.”
Conte won’t play three at the back just because he has a history of doing it. He will pick a formation that best suits his players.
“I don’t know if it is the most difficult challenge in my career. When I arrived in Juventus they came with two 7th places.”
He knows what faces him over the next few years. But he is used to the challenge and will relish it.
“We’re slightly underrated maybe and I hope that there is a small flame flickering that can grow into a blazing inferno”
A brilliant quote to end on. Chelsea might look in a bad spot now, but under Conte they will grow.
