Chelsea and Jose Mourinho’s style of play doesn’t necessarily call for a glut of forwards in the squad, with Fernando Torres and Demba Ba now joined by Romelu Lukaku. Yet it’s not in the Portuguese manager’s nature not to spend and make a mark, nor is it likely Roman Abramovich will sit quietly while others throughout the league continue to spend.
The signing of Andre Schurrle was questioned, though the German’s addition will prove to be a positive one over the course of the season. The club do, however, lack a star striker who can be a guarantee of at least 20 Premier League goals – a factor that could be a vital decider in the race for the title.
There’s no doubt that Chelsea have the financial muscle to compete, meaning there remains a wide enough pool of talent available to them, even at this stage of the summer.
