Chelsea may have already wrapped up the Premier League title this season, but you could still argue that they’re no where near the strongest team in Europe.
That’s evident by the fact they’re no longer in the Champions League, having been knocked out on away goals by Paris Saint-Germain. But it has always been Roman Abramovich’s dream to have a side capable of dominating world football for years and years to come.
The shackles of Financial Fair Play have made that much more difficult, but Abramovich and Jose Mourinho have the ability to make it happen.
So after making easy work of this season’s Premier League campaign, Mourinho will undoubtedly look to further strengthen his side in an attempt to go one further and replicate his domestic success in Europe next term.
The Blues have been linked with 21 players ahead of this summer. Some rumours do have some truth attached to them, others are simply fabricated from the imaginations of bored hacks on slow news days.
But who do the Chelsea fans want signed this summer? We ran a simple poll last week that asked Blues fans that very question. Fans could vote thumbs up or thumbs down on every player in the list, which gave us a pretty clear picture of who the fans do and don’t want strutting their stuff at Stamford Bridge next season.
204 Chelsea fans took part, and here’s the top five players they want signed by Mourinho this summer…
The Southampton right-back has reportedly held off signing a new St. Mary’s deal in the hope of signing for a club playing in the Champions League this summer.
Step forward Chelsea, who will certainly be playing in Europe’s elite competition. But is Clyne a target for Mourinho because he thinks he can genuinely strengthen his Blues side, or will he simply be used to boost the quota of home-grown players needed to satisfy FFP guidelines?
Either way, Chelsea fans appear to be pretty keen on having him at Stamford Bridge this summer. So much so that he beat a number of big time players to make the top five.
No surprise here, but will he be leaving Real Madrid in the summer?
The Welsh wizard’s Bernabeu future looked in the balance a few months ago as he was booed for supposedly not passing to star man Cristiano Ronaldo often enough. Yes, really.
Anyway, as a result he’s been linked with a possible return to the Premier League this summer. But the world’s most expensive player isn’t going to be affordable to everyone.
Chelsea could stretch to the astronomical fee Real would probably demand for Bale, should they decide to let him go just two seasons after paying Spurs £85million for him.
And the Chelsea faithful quite like the idea of having Bale in their side next season, probably in the hope that he’d come back and haunt old club Spurs while wearing the blue of west London.
A transfer window isn’t a transfer window if Chelsea aren’t happily sniffing around Atletico Madrid’s best players.
This time it’s believed Jose Mourinho quite likes the look of midfielder Koke who, if yesterday’s reports are bang on, has already agreed to sign for Chelsea this summer.
The Spanish international has scored two and assisted nine in 28 La Liga appearances for Atletico this season and could be a replacement for Brazilian midfielder Oscar, who is rumoured to be heading for the Stamford Bridge exit door this summer.
Not the fans’ number one choice, surprisingly, but he’s yet another expensive big name who has been linked with a switch to west London in the summer.
It has been confirmed that the Juventus midfielder has been the subject of several enquiries already, and a return to the Premier League could be on the cards for the France international.
He’s probably the most in-demand player in the world right now, which means Pogba is not going to come cheap. But when has that stopped Chelsea?
The fans would love to see him lining up for Chelsea next season and you’d think he’d be quite open to the idea as well. Some images released last summer suggest he’s already dreamt about it…
Varane is currently one of the most sought after centre-backs in world football.
But the 21-year-old France international could be on his way out of Real Madrid this summer, with the Daily Star claiming he’s growing increasingly frustrated by a lack of first-team football in the Spanish capital.
Blues boss Jose Mourinho said last year that Varane is “the best young defender in the world.” So it’s no real surprise he’s trying to tempt him to the Premier League.
And the fans also quite like the idea of him playing for the Blues next season. Could he be John Terry’s long term replacement?
