Chelsea’s Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas have made quite an impact on their side since arriving during the summer transfer window. The Spanish striker has already scored seven goals from five league games, contributing to 44% of Chelsea’s league goals this season. He also earned himself August’s Premier League Player of the Month award and a whoscored.com rating of 8.37. In the same amount of games, the Spanish midfielder has earned six assists and has created 18 chances and a whoscored.com rating of 8.
Out of the seven goals Diego Costa has scored, three of them were provided by an assist from Fabregas so nearly half of Costa’s goals have been due to a link up with his fellow Spaniard. Is the link between Diego Costa and Fabregas a combo in the making?
I think the way which this combination is going, we can predict what kind of path it could take by comparing it to the combination of Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney at Manchester United, especially during the 2007/08 Premier League season.
In that season, Ronaldo scored 31 goals from 34 Premier League appearances and Rooney earned 13 assists from 27 Premier League appearances. More than half of the goals Ronaldo scored came courtesy of assists from Rooney.
In this season, Ronaldo and Rooney helped the Red Devils win the Premier League title and the Champions League. Ronaldo picked up six individual awards during the same season, including the Premier League Golden Boot, FWA Footballer of the Year, and PFA Player’s Player of the Year. He was also part of the PFA Team of the Year.
Diego Costa and Ronaldo share some of the same characteristics including providing key passes, dribbling, finishing and heading attempts. Both players are a threat on the counter attack and are fouled often, leading to more goals.
Fabregas and Rooney also share some of the same characteristics. Both players are very good at holding onto the ball, playing key passes, passing, and playing layoffs.
Chelsea will be really happy if Diego Costa and Fabregas reach the same heights Ronaldo and Rooney did during that season. At the rate which they are going, I think Diego Costa will match Ronaldo’s goal scoring tally from the 2007/08 season. I also think Fabregas will achieve even more assists than what Rooney did during the 2007/08 season.
I think Diego Costa and Fabregas will carry on with their great form. With the way that Chelsea are going in the league as well, the duo will help the Pensioners secure their first league title since the 2009/10 season and their first since the return of Jose Mourinho to the club.
Chelsea paid £59m in total to bring the Spanish pair to Stamford Bridge during the summer and it looks like the duo will comfortably pay off that transfer fee, and help the Blues win more trophies along the way for years to come.
