It’s no secret Chelsea were on the lookout for another option at right wing-back during the summer. Antonio Conte has confirmed the Blues failed in their pursuit of Kyle Walker and after missing out on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to Liverpool, they eventually sealed a deal for Italy international Davide Zappacosta.
But Belgium defender Thomas Meunier, currently employed by PSG, has revealed he was in the mix to provide competition for Victor Moses as well, telling Sky Sports that the Premier League champions made a Deadline Day approach for his services.
“The last day of the transfer period Chelsea made an offer to Paris Saint-Germain, but I know the answer was no. The club didn’t want to sell me because we have two right-backs with Dani Alves and myself, it was difficult to sell one of us.
“I didn’t really think about it [joining Chelsea] because they called me in to tell me, ‘You will not move, so don’t think about Chelsea or any other club. You will stay in Paris and we are counting on you for the season’.”
And looking at the 26-year-old, he immediately stands out as a typical Chelsea defender, his powerful 6 foot 3 frame reminiscent of the unorthodox physicality club icon Branislav Ivanovic once provided on the right of their defence.
There’s an argument to suggest that makes Meunier less suited to the wing-back role used in Conte’s 3-4-2-1 setup, but the current season has been one mainly of attacking prowess for the 18-cap international, notching up three goals and one assist in 6 Ligue 1 starts.
Likewise, despite his size, Meunier has more commonly lined up as a right winger and a central midfielder than a centre-back throughout his career. So in many ways, that physicality is deceptive; Meunier is a offensive-minded player, who actually started out as a striker during his younger years.
When combined with his athletic attributes, including surprising speed for a player of his size, that makes Meunier an appealing choice for Chelsea’s right flank.
