For a team with Antonio Conte in charge, Chelsea do look short at the back. The five players currently at Stamford Bridge that you'd rely on and who aren't out on loan are John Terry, Gary Cahill, Kurt Zouma, Cesar Azpilicueta and Branislav Ivanovic and even then there are problems.

John Terry is coming to the end of his career, there's no guarantee he'll be playing week in week out. As for Kurt Zouma, he looks like he could be a good player but he's not getting the game time he perhaps deserves. Gary Cahill can be inconsistent and it's widely regarded in the Blues fan base that Ivanovic is past it. The only one there isn't really a problem with is Azpilicueta so for a team that on the quiet should be aiming for the title, that isn't enough.

Conte needs to bring in defenders that can play now at the highest level as well as for the future to build around Kurt Zouma and with Deadline Day approaching he needs to act fast. Fortunately for him we've drawn him up a shortlist, so it's over to you Antonio...

Daniele Rugani

Rugani

Few defenders in the world would get in the Juventus side ahead of Barzagli, Chiellini and Bonucci and for young Daniele Rugani it's no different. He has the potential to be a top drawer defender though and with Chelsea's aging back line it could be the perfect opportunity for a move. It would also help in having a fellow Italian as his boss for the settling in period at the club.

Leonardo Bonucci

Bonucci

Defenders don't come much better than Bonucci and with Terry nearing the end of his career, Chelsea need a world class defender in the near future. Bonucci is everything you'd expect from an Italian centre half, reliable, positions himself perfectly and he can play a bit too. The Blues might find it hard to draw him away from Juventus but if they can they'll go close to the title for sure.

Jetro Willems

Willems

Willems is young Dutch full-back already with good international experience. With Ivanovic on the wane for the club Chelsea need to be looking at fresh faces in the full-back areas and Willems would suit perfectly. He prefers to play on the left and this would allow Azpilicueta to move over to his favoured right side of defence meaning it's a potential move with a lot going for it.
