Atletico Madrid have a much smaller squad than either of their title rivals in Spain, and manager Diego Simeone has largely stuck with the same small group of players all season. This was the case again in the 1-0 win over Valencia on Sunday and the lack of rotation means legs are becoming increasingly heavy at the Vicente Caledron.
Jose Mourinho may have exaggerated how weakened a team he was going play against Liverpool, but resting the likes of Cahill, Ramires and Luiz can only be beneficial ahead of the second leg. Chelsea need to score, and are going to have to be more adventurous at Stamford Bridge, but Atletico remain at their most dangerous on the counter. Having these defensively minded players mentally fresh is a major boost for Chelsea’s chances.
