According to German publication Bild, former RB Leipzig boss Ralf Rangnick is in the frame to be Maurizio Sarri's successor at Chelsea this summer.

What's the word?

With Sarri on his way to Juventus, it appears the Blues are beginning to round up a shortlist of names that they will consider to be the next manager at Stamford Bridge.

The early favourite and undoubtedly the most popular choice amongst the club's fans had been Derby boss and Chelsea legend Frank Lampard, with reports even claiming that negotiations with the former England international would take place after confirmation of Sarri's departure.

But in what could be a late dramatic twist, Rangnick's name has come in from left-field and whilst he may not necessarily be the one Chelsea fans want, he could be the man they need.

The original Jurgen Klopp

Gegenpressing. The ultimate buzzword in football, and one so intrinsically linked with Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. The German had seemingly invented the whole thing back in his Borussia Dortmund days, but one man who was doing all that before it came into vogue was Rangnick.

The veteran manager speaks highly of getting his players to be the smartest on the pitch, making key decisions faster and more accurately. Via the Bundesliga's official website, he said: "If you want to increase the speed of your game, you have to develop quicker minds rather than quicker feet. Tactics, fitness and rules are all hugely important, but they’re only a means to an end. My job – the job – is to improve players. Players follow you as a manager if they feel that you make them better."

The 60-year-old has enjoyed a long and storied career and would not only bring those decades of past experience with him, but a style of football that is right in tune with the present and the future.

Chelsea's Premier League rivals have all got managers wanting to play on the front-foot, win the ball back as early as possible and dominate the game. Getting Rangnick, who was preaching the art of gegenpressing even before it became popular, would be a forward-thinking appointment.

Trust in youth

Perhaps more than at any other point in Chelsea's history, the new manager simply has to be someone ready to exploit the club's incredible conveyor belt of talent at academy level.

The prospect of a two-window transfer ban means the club can't just throw cash at the world's best players. They need someone with an eye for young talent and someone with the belief and trust to play them too.

At both Leipzig and Schalke, Rangnick has shown all of his skills at coaching his younger players to become better footballers, and some of his greatest successes have been the rises of players under his guidance.

In his second spell at Schalke in 2011, Rangnick oversaw the development of now PSG midfielder Julian Draxler, whilst his time at Leipzig has seen him bring through Timo Werner, Emil Forsberg and Liverpool's Naby Keita, amongst others.

All of them had improved under his watchful eye, and it is a testament to his ability to develop players that Arsenal loaned out highly-rated Emile Smith Rowe to learn from Rangnick's tutelage this season, while Everton youngster Ademola Lookman was superb in his short spell under the German.

Opting to go for Frank Lampard - a man who just completed his first managerial season - would simply be based on sentimentality. Going for the tried and trusted hand of Rangnick, who would combine exciting attacking football with plenty of chances for the youngsters, just seems like the most logical choice on all fronts.
