The Champions League draw always produces mouthwatering ties for a variety of reasons.
This year was no different, as Chelsea were drawn against Galatasaray, which pits them against former talisman Didier Drogba. The Ivorian has etched himself into Chelsea folklore, scoring 100 goals in 226 league appearances during his eight year stint at Stamford Bridge.
Drogba made the move to Turkey after a short spell in China with Shanghai Shenhua. Drogba has already scored 13 goals in 32 league appearances for the Galatasaray, helping the club in their bid to defend their title.
Drogba’s most memorable moment for Galatasaray came against Real Madrid in the Champions League round of 16 last season, when he lead a spirited second leg fight back after losing the first leg 3-0. Galatasaray lead the match 3-0, and were level on aggregate after Drogba’s goal, but two goals from Cristiano Ronaldo suppressed any hopes of a turnaround.
Talking ahead of Wednesday’s match, Drogba said “It will be difficult. You don’t stay eight years in a place you don’t like, especially in football – it is very emotional. I love Chelsea but I play for Galatasaray now and I will give everything for them.”
