Jason Puncheon left Crystal Palace following the expiry of his contract last month, so it was something of a surprise development to see him score for the club's U23 side on Tuesday – naturally Eagles fans were quick to react on Twitter.

The 33-year-old departed Selhurst Park having scored 16 goals and provided a further 22 assists in 169 appearances in all competitions for the south London outfit across two spells, spending the second half of the 2018/19 campaign on loan at Huddersfield Town.

While Palace's official Twitter account glossed over the fact that Puncheon was on the score-sheet, their opponents the Corinthian Casuals didn't and it certainly sparked a reaction from Eagles supporters on the social media platform.

At the time, goalkeeper Stephen Henderson had been the only arrival this summer on a free transfer – Jordan Ayew has since joined him – which has left some of the Selhurst Park faithful frustrated.

They have been linked with a move for Everton midfielder James McCarthy in the last week, but given Puncheon has played in more of a central midfield role in recent years rather than out wide, one fan even suggested that they no longer need him if the 33-year-old is still to be involved with the club.

Others were confused about the situation – even though it appears likely he is simply training with them as he searches for a new employer –  while a couple were quick to say that their one-time captain is "one of our own".
