Roy Hodgson has warned Crystal Palace fans that “heartache” is coming their way this season, per The London Evening Standard.

What’s he said?

The former England manager has seen his side take seven points from a possible 12 in the Premier League thus far this season.

A 0-0 draw with Everton on the first weekend of the season was followed by a 1-0 loss to Sheffield United, though their last two outings brought wins over Manchester United and Aston Villa.

They face Tottenham Hotspur this weekend but Hodgson has warned the Selhurst Park faithful that they are solely focused on avoiding relegation and very little more.

He said: “Fans would like to hear 'yeah it's going to be a great season, we've finished roughly in the middle of the table the last couple of seasons, we're going to go on and do much better than that'.

“I would like to say that to you but if I'm realistic I'm not certain I can. I think staying in the Premier League is always going to be the be-all and end-all for us and always going to be a fight, a bit of suffering.

“There's not going to be rainbows and blue skies and rose-coloured spectacles all the way through. There's going to be plenty of fighting and heartache along the way.”

Horrendous outlook

This is going to go down like a lead balloon with most Palace fans.

The Eagles have enjoyed some good form, have won at Old Trafford and are currently fourth in the Premier League.

Of course, few genuine supporters expect the club to keep that run going but to turn around and say that “heartache” is coming is a ridiculously negative way of looking at the situation.

He can think it privately, of course, but to say it out loud is another thing altogether.

If Palace go on a run of defeats now, it is not difficult to see where the fingers will be pointed and quite rightly so, too.
