The Athletic's Matt Woosnam has revealed what is proving to be 'problematic' in Crystal Palace's plans to build a new Main Stand at Selhurst Park.

On Thursday, Woosnam stated that he'd be 'surprised' if planning wasn't eventually granted to the Eagles to build their new academy site, after it was revealed by The Evening Standard that Bromley Council had asked for more details to be provided by the Premier League club.

However, a day after The Athletic's Crystal Palace correspondent tweeted his initial academy news, his response to a supporter who was asking about the redevelopment of Selhurst Park's Main Stand shed some light on what is holding that plan up.

What did he say?

When asked if he had any updates on the construction date of the new academy site or any news on the Main Stand, Woosnam tweeted: "My understanding is that no formal date has been set, but I'm expecting it to be determined in the next month. No idea on the stadium, that's problematic due to negotiations with Sainsbury's."

Must be sorted soon

Crystal Palace's desire to redevelop the Main Stand at Selhurst Park has been delayed for some time now, and really ought to be sorted soon.

A report on the club's official website from back in April 2018 revealed that construction work was set to begin at the end of the 2018/19 campaign, with completion 'likely' in 2021 - seeing as so much as a single brick hasn't been laid yet, it feels optimistic that this will be the case.

The club hasn't been too vocal about what is delaying the process, although Woosnam's revelation that Sainsbury's - who have a shop attached to Selhurst Park - are proving to be 'problematic' has shed some welcome light on the situation.
