According to Sky Sports and well… just about everybody, Crystal Palace have sacked Alan Pardew. Or, in the words of the club’s official website, ‘asked him to step down‘.

Alan Pardew steps down as Crystal Palace manager.

The timing is certainly surprising, with the Eagles amid preparations for a Boxing Day clash with Watford – not to mention the fact we’re just three days away from Christmas. It probably won’t be a particularly happy one in the Pardew household.
Nonetheless, it’s impossible to ignore the league table and Palace find themselves just one place and one point above the relegation with the third-worst goals conceded record in the division, despite investing in some considerable talent over the summer – not least including £30million striker Christian Benteke.
“I would just like to take the opportunity to thank everybody at Crystal Palace for their fantastic support. In particular a big thanks to the players who gave me absolutely everything and Steve Parish and his Board.
Personally I have a lot of good feelings for this football Club and am sad that my time there has ended.
I feel that I have a special bond with the club and hope that hasn’t been affected, I wish everybody associated with the Club the best of luck in the future including of course the fans who have been magnificent.”
It remains to be seen who’ll take Pardew’s place in the Palace dugout – Sam Allardyce is probably the standout candidate currently – but in the meantime, let’s enjoy some of the best, funniest and worst reactions from social media…
