Genius! Crystal Palace fans love Hodgson’s defensive switch

Loads of Crystal Palace fans have been reflecting on the weekend’s action, and they’re all in agreement on one major selection issue.

Even despite Patrick van Aanholt’s defensive deficiencies, it was a surprise to see him benched at Arsenal, as the Dutchman is undoubtedly one of the Eagles’ most gifted players.

Roy Hogdson clearly felt the physicality and conservativeness of Joel Ward was needed though, and the versatile 29 year-old was given the nod on Sunday.

The boss’ decision paid off in spades too, as his side came away from the Emirates – where only Manchester City, Tottenham and Manchester United have won this season – with a 3-2 victory.

Christian Benteke opened the scoring with a smart header, before Wilfried Zaha and James McArthur cancelled out Mesut Ozil’s deft equaliser and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could only find a consolation late on.

Ward was fantastic in defence, as were Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Martin Kelly and Scott Dann it should be said, and fans are now heaping praise on the decision to dump the more skilled van Aanholt.

A brave move from Hodgson if there ever was one, but the Twitter reactions down below think it was a master stroke…
