Crystal Palace fans have taken to Twitter after Roy Hodgson confirmed that James McCarthy suffered an injury against Brighton, which forced him off at half-time.

The Republic of Ireland international made his 11th Premier League start of the campaign at the Amex Stadium on Saturday, but lasted just 45 minutes before being replaced by Jairo Riedewald - an interesting decision from Hodgson, considering Palace's captain Luka Milivojevic was also on the bench albeit still feeling the effects of a recent illness.

The former England manager confirmed that McCarthy felt his hamstring, and took the decision alongside his assistant Ray Lewington that it wasn't worth risking the former Wigan man.

After coming onto the pitch, Riedewald performed well.

The Netherlands international made three clearances and three interceptions, while he also managed to have one shot as well.

It was a very composed display from the former Ajax man, especially after McCarthy's solid first-half showing - the Irishman made two key passes and completed all of his three crosses.

Let's see how the Crystal Palace fans on Twitter reacted to Hodgson's update...

To kick off the reaction, these two supporters tweeted about how they feel Riedewald deserves his chance.

The Dutchman impressed at left-back in Patrick van Aanholt's absence around the turn of the year, so much so that he won the club's Player of the Month award for January before being dropped when the former Sunderland man returned - he has definitely gone about his business with an excellent attitude.

Elsewhere, these two supporters decided to comment on McCarthy after hearing the news.

Liam said that injury to the summer signing was a "shame" - it perhaps isn't too much of a disaster given the fact that players such as Milivojevic and Riedewald are waiting in the wings.

Lastly, these two fans reckon Milivojevic will be the one to play in McCarthy's absence, rather than Riedewald.

Phil wasn't too positive on that topic, and feels that the Serbian will bottle it against Watford - in fairness to Phil, Palace have done quite well without the former Anderlecht man at times this season, winning away to West Ham while also drawing against Arsenal and Manchester City without their No.4.
