2017/18 hasn’t been an enjoyable season for Christian Benteke. Either side of a lengthy injury layoff, the 32-cap Belgium international has failed to find a goal in the Premier League – a far cry from the 17 he bagged across all competitions last term.
Perhaps that’s why the 6 foot 3 striker took the audacious step of wrestling the ball off designated penalty taker Luka Milivojevic against Bournemouth last weekend when the Eagles won a spot kick in injury time.
The winner would have been huge for not only Palace but also Benteke personally, however his effort went straight down the middle and cannoned off Asmir Begovic’s legs. While it perhaps would be wrong to suggest Benteke did it for entirely selfish reasons, it hasn’t gone down well with Roy Hodgson or Palace supporters.
With that in mind, we recently asked Eagles followers whether Benteke should be dropped from the starting XI for tonight’s Premier League clash with Watford and although our poll revealed that fans are relatively divided on the issue, 53% voted in favour of leaving out the former Liverpool forward.
