According to The Guardian, Crystal Palace are interested in signing Genk striker Mbwana Samatta, while Norwich and Brighton are also keeping an eye on the prolific forward.
Well, the Eagles are reportedly in the market for a striker due to Christian Benteke’s continued absence through injury, while they could do with a goalscorer anyway given the fact that they have scored just 19 goals in 21 Premier League games this season – the second-fewest of any side in England’s top-flight.
In Samatta’s case, he seems like a man who could help solve that problem.
The Tanzania international – who would become the first Tanzanian to play in the Premier League should he arrive – has netted ten goals in all competitions this season including a goal against Liverpool at Anfield, while he also notched a staggering 32 goals in all competitions in 2018/19.
Intriguingly, Samatta has a €10m (£8.5m) release clause.
As aforesaid, The Guardian report that Palace are in the market for a new striker given Benteke’s continued absence through injury.
However, even when the Belgium international was fit, he was being kept on the bench with Jordan Ayew starting ahead of him in attack.
The former Liverpool striker has only made four Premier League starts this season – failing to score or assist a goal – and Samatta’s potential arrival at Selhurst Park would only add more competition for the striking role under Roy Hodgson.
While there is no certainty that Samatta will walk straight into Hodgson’s XI, it truly wouldn’t be good news for Benteke if another forward was added to the attacking ranks while he himself wasn’t getting much game-time as things stood anyway, where only Ayew and Connor Wickham provided competition for him.
It’s the dawn of a new decade in the Premier League, but how much do you know about the last 10 years?
Signing Samatta would seem like good news for the Eagles given his excellent goal record, although for the former Liverpool striker, it wouldn’t seem like a positive thing for himself personally.
In other news, this Crystal Palace target surely impressed Hodgson and did his transfer chances no harm with an excellent performance against the Eagles…
