Connor Wickham completed his loan move to Sheffield Wednesday on transfer deadline day.

The 26-year-old will move to the Owls until the end of the season after appearing just eight times this season at Selhurst Park - he managed just one goal and one assist during that time.

The former Ipswich striker is a player that promised so much as a youngster for the Tractor Boys, with the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham all reported to be targeting a move for him.

Did he really play for us?! No Palace fan has managed to name all of these obscure Eagles signings....

However, it has never really happened for him in the Premier League. In 120 appearances in English football's top tier, he has managed an underwhelming 19 goals, whilst he has just 11 for the Eagles in 50 matches in all competitions.

He hasn't always had it easy - he had to deal with a horrific cruciate ligament rupture which kept him out of action for 470 days - but the harsh truth is that Palace should have been ruthless with him.

He is costing the club a fortune - since 2015-16, he has earned £60,000-a-week, or £3.12m a year, as per Sportrac - that means that each appearance has cost the club £312,000. With Palace not one of the Premier League's big boys where money doesn't matter as much, that is surely a fee they cannot afford to part with for a player who has been so ineffective. It just goes to show how much a middling player can pick up in the crazy world of football.

With just 18 months left on his contract, Palace really should have pushed to move him on permanently during this window. That, of course, may have been easier said than done, but it would have been the best thing for all involved. Wickham may have finally found a club where he could settle and earn some real playing time - and provide some actual value - whilst Palace would have been cutting a big sum from their wage bill. Everyone would have been a winner.

As it is, he will be back in the summer, and Palace will face another conundrum as to what to do with him.

Meanwhile, Palace fans react as three players depart the club on deadline day.
