Following a quiet January transfer window in terms of incomings, you'd suspect that it could be a busy summer for Everton and their manager Carlo Ancelotti.

Despite winning four and losing just one of his seven Premier League matches at the helm so far, the Italian will know that he will need some new faces to add to this squad if they are to push on and be contenders for European football every season.

Yes, there might have been an improvement in the last couple of months, but this is the same group of players that found themselves in the relegation zone when Marco Silva was sacked.

The Merseyside outfit may have not done any business – aside from bringing in Jarrad Branthwaite who has linked up with the U23s – before the deadline last week, but the rumours are already beginning ahead of the next window.

Corriere dello Sport, via Area Napoli, reported earlier this week that as well as Napoli ace Hirving Lozano, Ancelotti could also be interested in two of the Mexico international's teammates too – Dries Mertens and Jose Callejon.

The 60-year-old of course knows the trio well from his time in charge of the Serie A outfit prior to his sacking in December, and the latter two would certainly be interesting additions.

Now given they are both 32 years of age, bringing Mertens and Callejon to Goodison Park certainly wouldn't be a long-term investment for majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri.

However, the Toffees are at a point now where they have a great chance to qualify for Europe even now in what has been shown as a weak Premier League outside of Liverpool and perhaps Leicester City and Manchester City.

Despite what has largely been a disappointing campaign for Everton, they only lie eight points adrift of the Chelsea and the top four, four below Tottenham Hotspur and two below Manchester United, and they are actually two points above Arsenal in the standings.

That is proof that with the right mix of blend, quality and experience next term, perhaps they could be competing even more seriously for a top-six finish for the entire campaign.

A player like Mertens needs little introduction given he has 90 caps for Belgium and has scored 119 goals and provided a further 71 assists in 305 games for Napoli, while Callejon has 79 goals and 77 assists in 332 outings for the Italian outfit.

Did he really play for us?! No Everton fan has managed to name all of these obscure Toffees players....

The latter has nine assists this term while the former has 10 goals, and these are clearly two players who know how to make a difference in the final third on a consistent basis.

Callejon usually plays on the right – a position director of football Marcel Brands admitted they lack depth in during the club's AGM in January – while his Belgian teammate would most likely be a foil for Dominic Calvert-Lewin or Moise Kean up top given where he has generally played for Napoli in recent years.

The duo can make a difference for Everton this season, and would get Ancelotti's revolution at Goodison off to the perfect start.
