Italian journalist Nicolo Schira has provided an update on Everton's reported pursuit of Real Madrid attacking midfielder James Rodriguez, and many Toffees fans have reacted to the Twitter post.

Spanish media outlet El Desmarque claimed earlier this week that the Merseyside outfit are leading the race to sign the Colombia international during the January transfer window.

It is a claim that has since been backed up by Schira on his Twitter account, with the Italian suggesting that new Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti is keen to get the 28-year-old to Goodison Park, and that the club is in talks with his agent Jorge Mendes and Real themselves with the La Liga club wanting €42m (£35.5m) for him.

That must certainly be a tempting fee for a player who was the top scorer at the 2014 World Cup and has 37 goals and 41 assists in 120 appearances in all competitions for Real, even if he has suffered a number of niggling injury issues in recent seasons, as per Transfermarkt.

Some Toffees supporters were certainly ready to believe this latest update and say that it could be a landmark moment for the club, with one individual comparing it to when Manchester City signed Robinho back in 2008.

However, not every fans was so pleased with the rumour, or the potential of a deal happening.

Did he play for Everton? Simple question but a lot tougher than you think...

Indeed the following supporter believes it is too big a fee to spend on someone his age - even if they are two years out - and while he would undoubtedly be a huge signing for Everton he is more a player for now than for the future.

In other Everton news, Toffees fans have been reacting to a 26-year-old striker's comments, with one saying "imagine him under Ancelotti"...
