Baines hopeful of Wembley final appearance

Everton defender Leighton BainesEverton full-back Leighton Baines has admitted that he is hoping the club can reach the FA Cup final, after overcoming Oldham in their fifth round replay.

The Toffess eliminated their League One rivals with a convincing 3-1 victory at Goodison Park to book a spot in the quarter-finals.

Goals from Kevin Mirallas, Leon Osman and Baines gave the hosts a 3-0 lead, before Oldham’s Matt Smith pulled back a consolation effort.

After being knocked out by local rivals Liverpool in the semi-final last season, Baines is hoping that Everton can go one better this time and secure a spot in the showpiece final:

“We’ve been close a couple of times and that whets your appetite. We want to go further.” He told ITV1.

Wigan await Everton in the next round, and Baines, a former Latics player, feels that it will be a difficult encounter:

“We’ve got a tough tie next.

“We’re at home so we’ll be favourites, but we’ve had tough games against them the last couple of seasons and they’re coming off the back of a good win at the weekend so they’ll be confident.”

Oldham had a good shout for a penalty turned down, when Phil Jagielka’s clearance appeared to hit Darron Gibson on the arm.

Baines says that he didn’t see the incident, but admits that every team needs a little bit of luck every now and again:

“I haven’t seen it but (if so) we’ll take our bit of luck, you need it if you’re going to get through in the cup.”
