Everton are reportedly battling a number of teams to sign Genk forward Mbwana Samatta, and the 25-year-old could be the next in a long line of Marcel Brands transfer gems.
According to The Daily Mirror (via HITC), West Ham are “tracking” Samatta, but Everton, Brighton and Burnley are all interested as well.
The Genk striker has scored seven times in seven Jupiler League starts this season, so it is perhaps no surprise that a host of Premier League clubs are sniffing around.
While this is Samatta’s first real run of form in a European League, Everton hired Brands as their new director of football for a reason, and if the transfer guru sees potential in a move then what’s to lose?
Samatta moved to Belgian outfit Genk in 2016 after firing in 60 goals in 103 appearances for Congolese side TP Mazembe, but his performances this season have shot up to a new level.
The 5ft 11in Tanzania international is not particularly fast or strong, but he has the pure goalscoring instincts that very few players have, scoring seven times in nine league appearances, while also adding a Europa League goal.
He just has a knack of finding himself in the right place at the right time, and his composure and finishing is second to none.
The 25-year-old also has a brilliant work ethic, making him the perfect fit for Marco Silva’s high-tempo style. Basically, he’s Oumar Niasse but with better end product.
Samatta isn’t going to come in and immediately become Everton’s new number nine, but if the Toffees could get him for a reasonable price then he’s certainly worth a gamble.
Brands uncovered gems like Dries Mertens and Mousa Dembele during his time in the Eredivisie, and a move for Samatta would add extra depth and competition to Everton’s front line.
