Former Everton striker Tony Cottee has told radio station talkSPORT (October 17, 12pm) that the club need to buy a regular goalscorer.

What's the word?

The Toffees have had a mixed start to the season as they have won three, drawn three and lost two in the Premier League.

The club currently reside 11th in the standings, and even though they have shown promising signs, the team's attacking options are limited.

Cenk Tosun and Oumar Niasse have scored one goal between them, which has forced manager Marco Silva to push Richarlison into a more advanced role.

Romelu Lukaku's departure in 2017 is still heavily felt as the club have struggled to find a suitable replacement.

Cottee, who played for the Toffees between 1988 and 1994, believes that the lack of a threatening presence up front is an issue.

While speaking to talkSPORT (October 17, 12pm), the pundit said:

"They’ve got one massive, massive problem. They need a goal-scorer, they’ve needed it since Lukaku left. They signed Tosun. You need six, seven games to get that confidence and to show you can score every week but I don’t see that [in him]."

How can Silva solve this?

For the time being, all the Portuguese coach can do is use the players that he already has at his disposal.

Placing Richarlison up front is a decent solution for now, but the Brazilian can be even more effective in wide areas.

Therefore, Everton need to jump into the January transfer window to bring in a reliable goalscorer.

Most elite players tend to be easier to sign in the summer rather than the winter, so the Toffees should be open to loan arrangements if possible.

It is unlikely that Tosun and Niasse's careers at Goodison Park will last much longer, but replacements must be acquired before selling.
