Everton boss ready to sell star in January

Nikica Jelavic (Everton)Everton manager Roberto Martinez is open to selling Nikica Jelavic in January to fund improvements to his squad, according to reports from The Mirror.

The Spaniard is desperate to secure a top-class centre-forward over the winter to boost his side’s pursuit of European qualification, and is thought to have grown frustrated by the former Rangers man’s below par displays.

After making a blistering start to life in the Premier League, the 28-year-old’s form has dipped dramatically, leading to an extended period away from the Toffees first-team, both last season and this term.

Rumours suggest that West Ham are keen to offer the Croatian a new setting to get his career back on track, but the London club are only willing to sanction a loan switch.

Martinez is hopeful that he can sell Jelavic and use the funds to aid his pursuit of a replacement.

He currently has Romelu Lukaku leading the line, but the burly Belgian is set to return to parent club Chelsea at the end of the season.

A loan swoop for former Tottenham and Fulham ace Clint Dempsey has been mooted as a potential short-term fix in the New Year.

The American international is free to make a three-month move during the MLS off-season, and is keen to do so in a bid to maintain his fitness ahead of the 2014 World Cup.

Should Everton sell Nikica Jelavic? Or does he still have a role to play?
