Speaking to The Liverpool Echo, Neville Southall has suggested Duncan Ferguson will "learn masses" working under Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti.

What did he say?

After the departure of Marco Silva, Ferguson took over the reins on a temporary basis at Goodison Park, and sparked an impressive revival in his short time in charge.

The Toffees remained unbeaten in the time that he was in the dug-out, securing a notable win over Chelsea and holding the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal.

And Southall has insisted Ferguson will learn a lot under Ancelotti, and that the Merseyside club will have a ready-made successor for the Italian in the future.

He said: "Duncan is going to learn masses working under Carlo. Whatever happens in the future if Duncan stays at Everton you've got a ready-made fella who has proved he can do the job and make an impact. With all that he'll learn under Ancelotti then he'll be a real contender if the job comes up again in a few years time.

"It's two-fold in that we've now got a proven winner as a manager and we've got someone who can potentially be the next Everton manager underneath him and we haven't had that for a while so there's a positive."

Learning from the best

Whilst Ferguson showed that he already has some impressive credentials by negotiating a tough period for Everton when he was caretaker manager, he will learn just as much under someone like Ancelotti.

The Italian has seen it and done it all both as a player and as a manager, winning multiple Champions League titles. His experience of working with sides like Real Madrid, Chelsea and Milan, amongst others, makes him the ideal sounding board for Ferguson to lean on and pick up certain things from.

Did he play for Everton? Simple question but a lot tougher than you think...

That will then put him in the best possible place to succeed Ancelotti when the time comes, as Southall suggests.

Meanwhile, this Everton target could dazzle on the right wing.
