Some Everton fans have taken to Twitter to discuss Jean-Philippe Gbamin’s debut against Crystal Palace on Saturday, as the Toffees were held to a 0-0 draw by the south Londoners.
Gbamin was signed in a £25m deal from Mainz in the summer as a replacement for Idrissa Gueye, who joined PSG.
The 23-year-old probably wasn’t expecting to come off the bench as soon as he did. Gbamin was stripped and ready for action at half-time after Andre Gomes suffered an injury, and looked a tiny bit rusty having been dispossessed twice and having also had one unsuccessful touch.
In fairness, the Ivory Coast international played at the Africa Cup of Nations during the summer, and his transfer was only made official at the start of August which has left him with little time to acclimatise and gel with his teammates at Everton.

Overall, it wasn’t a shambolic debut from the 6 foot 1 midfielder, who held his own against a hard working Palace side.
Let’s take a look at how the Everton fans reacted on Twitter to Gbamin’s debut…
Gbamin gets my backing. Brands knows a player when he sees one! #Patience

Good thing for me about Gbamin is that he didn’t hide.
Clearly unfit, obviously (and understandably) nervous and not on the same wavelength as his team-mates.
But he always showed and was positive. He’ll be sound #EFC

Gbamin needs time to adjust. Don’t all hound him at once.

Gbamin looked miles off it but he will quickly learn. Definitely doesn’t need our fans on his back while he adjusts to the pace and intensity of the PL. #EFC

Early days of course, but Gbamin looked more Maguaye Gueye than Idrissa there.

Thought Gbamin’s performance was to be expected. He seemed very composed, neat and tidy when he came on, just a couple of misplaced passes later in the game, but all in all, nothing to be upset about. Big unit as well. #EFC
