Everton boss Marco Silva named Tom Davies as captain for Wednesday’s EFL Cup clash with Rotherham United.
Davies will not turn 21 until next June, but was handed the armband for the League Cup match at Goodison Park, which would have been a huge honour.
The midfielder came through the youth system at Everton, and has made 72 first-team appearances for the Merseyside outfit – including two in the Premier League this term.
It would be fair to say that a number of Everton fans are still unconvinced when it comes to Davies, however, and that was again made clear on Wednesday night.
Indeed, upon hearing the news that Davies would wear the armband against Rotherham, there were Everton fans who took to social media to reveal their disappointment.
One of the club’s supporters claimed that it was ‘another ridiculous decision’ from head coach Marco Silva, who also selected Sandro Ramirez in the XI despite reports linking the Spaniard with a move to Real Sociedad.
A selection of the Twitter reaction can be seen below:
Davies should not be the captain, that is another ridiculous decision by Silva. He’s only 20, played only 70 top flight games and was easily the worst player on the pitch last weekend. Not against him playing tonight but as skipper, with so many other better options? Poor. #EFC

Literally nobody is happy about Davies being captain

Is this a joke? He shouldn’t even be in the squad.

Sink or swim for Davies

It’s not too late for this to change but Tom Davies is Everton’s Jordan Henderson #EFC

Time for Davies to step up and show us he can play, captains arm-band, lesser opposition there’s no excuses for him tonight. #efc
