Alan Shearer has defended Sam Allardyce after the Toffees grabbed another three points on Saturday, but Everton fans are not impressed by the comments.
While a fair few Everton fans appreciate the job Sam Allardyce has done for the Toffees, the overwhelming majority are fed up with the former England man.
Big Sam’s side added another three points at Huddersfield on Saturday though, and Alan Shearer thinks the boss has every right to feel hard done by.
“He’s [Allardyce] got every right to be miffed,” Shearer said on Match of the Day.
“He wasn’t their first choice, and they only wanted to give him a contract until the end of the season. Sam had them over a barrel really because they were in a desperate situation.
“But when you look at the clubs who have changed managers because they’re in the mire, they’re in the relegation fight, there’s a lot of them still there.”
Shearer isn’t wrong about that, as clubs like West Ham, Stoke and Swansea are all still in danger of going down, while Crystal Palace look to have secured their safety only this weekend.
Allardyce has helped moved Everton up into eighth place, but fans have not been impressed by his demeanour or style of play, and Shearer feels the manager deserves more credit.
“They were secure two-and-a-half months ago. If he had have signed a contract until the end of the season everyone would have said: ‘What a brilliant job he’s done.’
“He’s done the job he was brought in to do.”
While the ex-Newcastle striker is spot on about the job Allardyce has done of keeping the Toffees in the league, fans want much more than that, and they’re not happy with the comments.

Omg am not being funny sam isn’t the manager for Everton in fact I feel insulted by him being appointed manager we are not going to win anything with him he keeps teams out of relegation and just about able to do that

Moshiri weak and naive. Only wanted him until the end of the season, but panicked and gave him the 18 months he wanted. A decision he will forever regret as it might ultimately turn the Everton support against him. #EVERTON LOYAL

Everton aren’t in the same bracket as any of the clubs you’ve mentioned there tho, @alanshearer

Some kind of @BBCSport agenda against fans who watch the team every week, listen to what the manager spouts and wants more than mid table, long ball football for their team. We have ambition and aren't West Ham, Sunderland et al

Were you happy with Sam when he was at Newcastle @alanshearer ? Tosun wasnt one of his signings and he put him in the U23s as he 'want good enough'. Takes the praise when they win and players didnt follow a plan when they lose! Get rid asap

All good and well pundits looking at results and saying 'well you won'. Football is an entertainment business and fans don't turn up to watch a hard earned point at home to Huddersfield.
Allardyce tactics are horrendous to watch week in week out so these pundits need to get real
