Many Everton fans on Twitter have been reacting after a report by The Athletic said much-criticised midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson still believes he has the ability to make an impact and turn his career around at Goodison Park.

Despite being a regular in the starting XI during the current campaign – he has been named on the team-sheet in 21 of the 24 Premier League matches he has been available for in 2019/20 – he has come under regular criticism from supporters for his performances, including in the 3-2 defeat against Arsenal on Sunday.

Indeed, despite costing a mouth-watering £45m in 2017, the Iceland international has only scored two and assisted two in 27 appearances in all competitions this term.

To be fair to the 30-year-old, he has largely played in a central midfield role rather than his preferred No.10 role since Marco Silva left the Merseyside outfit, with both Duncan Ferguson and Carlo Ancelotti preferring a 4-4-2 system since.

One even suggested that the Toffees would have been better off keeping Wayne Rooney at Goodison Park.

The former England international left the club in 2018, and is currently plying his trade for Derby County in the Championship.

However, not everyone was so harsh on Sigurdsson, with one suggesting he should still be kept as a substitute moving forward.

Another said it wasn't his fault given the number of managers he has worked under who haven't been able to build a side around him.

One further individual went a step further in the discussions about the Icelandic man, suggesting that Everton would be unlikely to achieve a top-four finish in the Premier League with the former Swansea and Tottenham man in the XI.

Indeed, Richarlison said in an interview with The Liverpool Echo this week that he wants to play in the Champions League with the Toffees.
