Everton fans rip apart Silva following EFL Cup exit to Southampton

For teams like Everton this season, competing for the Premier League title is impossible and there are no European competitions to focus on.

Therefore, the FA Cup and EFL Cup are their only realistic chances of winning silverware.

The Toffees went up against fellow league opposition Southampton in the fourth round of the EFL Cup on Tuesday night at Goodison Park.

Danny Ings opened the scoring for the Saints in the 44th minute and Theo Walcott later equalised against his old club with five minutes left to go of normal time.

The tie could not be decided before the whistle blew, so penalties ensued but it was disappointing for Everton as they lost 4-3 in the shootout.

Walcott and Richarlison both missed from the spot, but the majority of fans’ anger was directed at manager Marco Silva for making seven changes to the team.

Many saw the EFL Cup as their main chance of winning a trophy, and after Tuesday’s defeat fingers are being pointed at the Portuguese coach, who was warmly welcomed to the club when he replaced Sam Allardyce in the summer.

After the defeat to Southampton, Silva spoke to the media and blamed a lack of confidence on the result.
