Everton fans on Twitter have been discussing former star Ross Barkley after Chelsea announced on Thursday that they had agreed a deal to sign Hakim Ziyech from Ajax in the summer.

As per BBC Sport, the Morocco international will cost the Blues an initial £33.3m, which could rise to £36.6m with add-ons.

It will be certainly be interesting to see where the 26-year-old fits in at Stamford Bridge, with the majority of his appearances this season as recorded by Transfermarkt either coming as a No.10 or on the right wing.

If he is used in the former in the 4-2-3-1 system that Frank Lampard has used often in 2019/20, then that would surely put Barkley's place at risk as he is seen as an attack-minded central midfielder himself.

It's fair to say that things haven't gone brilliantly for the 26-year-old since he left Goodison Park for west London in 2018, and he has played just 781 minutes of football this term, also suffering from injury issues.

Many Everton supporters have had their say on a player who isn't seen in the greatest light following his exit two years ago, and they started to name clubs they can see the England international at next believing he has been pushed down the pecking order.

Newcastle United, West Ham United and Leeds United are just some of the clubs to get a mention, as you can see below.

Others chose to focus on saying Barkley should never have left his boyhood club for Chelsea, with one labelling the situation as "sad, but not expected".

You do have to feel that he would be playing far more regularly for Everton than he is for their Premier League rivals right now.

Others chose to use the bringing up of Barkley to bash current midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson with.

The Iceland international has come under criticism from fans on Twitter for his performances this season, with one individual suggesting that he hasn't turned out to be much of an upgrade on the 26-year-old.

Did he really play for us?! No Everton fan has managed to name all of these obscure Toffees players....

Interestingly enough, according to Transfermarkt Sigurdsson is only five goal and 14 assists short of Barkley's record of 27 goals and 28 assists in 179 outings for Everton having played 79 fewer games, so it is difficult to say that he hasn't proved to be much of an upgrade.

On the other hand, you can understand the opinion given the 30-year-old has produced performances like the one against Liverpool in the FA Cup last month where he picked up a 2/10 rating from The Liverpool Echo, having spent £45m on him.
