Everton fans have been discussing the role of Wayne Rooney, and most are in agreement that playing the veteran in midfield is a big mistake.
Sam Allardyce’s midfield dilemma was more evident than ever in the recent 3-1 loss to Manchester City, as Morgan Schneiderlin and Wayne Rooney were simply outfought and outnumbered.
Rooney in particular has been a selection dilemma of his own this season, as fans and manager alike know it’s difficult to leave such a talented player out, but his total lack of mobility makes it difficult to pick him consistently.
The 32 year-old Scouser enjoyed some red hot form as an attacker before Christmas, but missed some time with illness and has really struggled since his return.
He has now been moved further back into midfield, where his lack of pace and stamina is more evident than ever.
Of course, Rooney’s unrivalled passing ability gives plenty of reason to deploy him further back, whether that be in midfield or as a number ten, but fans just don’t think he has what it takes.
Some fans have even pointed to the missed chances from players like Yannick Bolasie as reason to play Rooney further forward, claiming if those chances fall to the 32 year-old he’ll bury them every time.

He’s absolute garbage and he’s on 150k a week, Everton are an embarrassment. Vlasic cant get a game. Schneiderlin and rooney in midfield against one of the fastest, if not the fastest in the league

He is out of his depth but people feel some sort of loyalty to him for some reason or another. He can't play in midfield, when Sigurdsson back he can't play number 10 and he just has not got the legs to play as a number 9.
