Everton interested in Belgian ace

Ajax Defender Toby Alderweireld

Everton have made an approach to sign Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld, according to the Guardian.

The Belgian has been linked with a move to the Premier League already this summer, with Norwich City and Merseyside rivals Liverpool reportedly interested in the defender.

But Alderweireld’s agent Soren Lerby has confirmed that the Toffees have made an enquiry over the 24-year-old.

“It is true that Everton came forward for Alderweireld. Though there are other concrete directions, Toby must now look at which team he finds the most challenging,” Lerby said.

Despite already signing Antonio Alcaraz from his old side Wigan, Everton boss Roberto Martinez could bring in the Belgian to further strengthen his new side’s defensive abilities. After rejecting a move to Norwich City, Alderweireld could be tempted to move to a club with ambitions of playing in Europe.

The defensive additions and speculation has however, led to questions over Jonny Heitinga’s future at Goodison Park.

Alderweireld could be just one of a few faces departing Ajax this summer, with the futures of Christian Eriksen and Siem De Jong both in doubt.

Martinez will look to have his squad close to being, if not completed, by August 17th, when the Toffess travel to Carrow Road to play Norwich on the opening day of the new season.

Would Alderweireld do well at Everton? Who should he join?
