Everton linked to out-of-favour Brazilian striker Gabriel Barbosa

Gabriel Barbosa, the Inter Milan striker on loan at Santos, is being linked with a move to Everton, per reports in Goal Brazil.

What’s the word?

Barbosa is a Brazilian striker known as Gabigol by teammates and friends and is currently on loan back at his former Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A side Santos having failed to establish his presence in Italy.

Gabigol emerged out of the Santos academy like fellow Brazilian Neymar, but his move to Europe in 2016 failed to reach the same lofty heights. Inter Milan paid the Brazilian side €30 (£26.5m) to complete the transfer two years ago, yet that value has only decreased year on year as per his £7.2m valuation on Transfermarkt.

The 5ft 9in forward is currently playing his best season in terms of finding the net with 16 goals in 30 games, but accepts his future does not reside in Milan when his loan expires in January.

A lot of risk, but maybe some reward

Everton are certainly in need of another striker with Cenk Tosun the main striker at the club.

Gabigol appears keen on a move to Everton, with Goal Brazil’s report suggesting the striker’s friend and advisor, businessman Kia Joorabchian, has opened the door to Premier League sides including Crystal Palace and has links to Toffees stakeholders via his work.

Should the Merseyside club make a move, it could pay dividends providing the board haggles a good deal for someone who has struggled in Europe though his contract runs until 2021.

Since returning on loan to the Brazilian club, the striker has featured in 2,530 minutes. In those, Santos have seen the striker win 40% of his aerial duels, take 33 shots and convert an effort every 158 minutes, mostly from inside the box via his left foot, as per WhoScored.

His addition to a Marco Silva side would give the Blues another option to select at the top of the pitch with Tosun regularly struggling for form. Gabigol would also add a forward who can link the play, despite his height, having completed 79% of his 831 passes this season.
