The Portugal international has been a central figure throughout the Saints’ rise from League One, making 257 appearances across all competitions since signing from Crystal Palace in January 2010 and captaining them from 2014 onwards.
The 32-year-old has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most consistent centre-backs since Southampton returned to the top flight, whilst his performances as Portugal claimed the Euro 2016 title are said to have attracted interest from Turkey, Italy and Spain.
But there is also plenty of interest here in England, with The Times reporting on Sunday that Fonte is on Jose Mourinho’s transfer hit list at Manchester United, alongside Juventus star Leonardo Bonucci and Benfica centre-back Ezequiel Garay.
But according to The Daily Record, who also moot Fonte as a Red Devils target, Everton have already tabled a £9million bid for the 6 foot 2 centre-back, who is reportedly keen to work under former Saints boss Ronald Koeman once again.
However, Southampton are determined to resist interest in their skipper and are yet to ‘formally communicate’ Everton’s offer to Fonte.
