Everton have been linked with a move for Red Bull Salzburg wonderkid Hannes Wolf, and it could be bad news for Tom Davies.

What's the story?

According to The Mirror, Everton are tracking Wolf after the 19 year-old’s incredible breakout season with Salzburg.

The report claims the young midfielder is on the radar of “a number of Premier League teams” after making 45 appearances for the Austrian club last season.

Everton are of course after some reinforcements in midfield, and Wolf’s ability to play as a winger or attacking midfielder would make him very tidy addition to Marco Silva’s squad.

The teenager was so good last season that he would almost certainly push for a starting place at Goodison, which could be really bad news for Davies.

The young Scouser is expected to play one of the more advanced midfield positions in Silva’s favoured 4-3-3 formation, and the supremely talented Wolf could jump above him in the pecking order for those spots.

Ticks all the boxes?

Perhaps the most appealing thing about Wolf is his versatility. The 19 year-old is best as an attacking midfielder, but also spent time on the wing and even as a “false nine” last season.

Across his 45 appearances, the teenager grabbed 12 goals and eight assists last season, which is elite end product for such a young player.

Fans may be concerned about poaching talent from an undoubtedly weaker league, but Wolf made nine Europa League appearances as Salzburg marched their way to the semi-finals, so the step up to the Premier League shouldn’t be too daunting for him.

Valued at just £3.6m by Transfermarkt, Wolf loves to use his dazzlingly quick feet to skip past defenders before finding a killer pass, and his youth coach’s comments show he’s not afraid to get stuck in either.

“Hannes is a special player with a special quality, but he works for the team too – that's what I like,” his youth coach Marco Rose said.

If Silva wants a skilful young attacker that can cover multiple positions, then he can’t go wrong with Wolf, and the Austrian’s end product sets him apart from other youngsters of his ilk.
