Everton must look to sign Gomes on permanent deal

Andre Gomes is currently on loan at Everton from Barcelona, but the Toffees should be looking to secure a permanent deal for the midfielder at the start of 2019.

What’s the word, then?

Gomes joined Everton on loan from Barcelona towards the start of August, with the midfielder being deemed surplus to requirements at Camp Nou.

Gomes made 31 appearances in all competitions for the Spanish champions last term, but largely struggled to make his mark, and it soon became clear that he would not be part of Ernesto Valverde’s plans for the 2018-19 campaign.

A number of English clubs, including Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United, were linked with the Portugal international, but it was Everton that secured his signature.

Injury meant that Gomes only made his debut for the Toffees last weekend, but the midfielder was class personified against Crystal Palace.

Gomes is due to spend the entire 2018-19 campaign with Everton, but the Merseyside outfit, who have ambitions of becoming a top-four team, really should be looking to tie up a permanent deal in January.

Would Gomes be worth the outlay?

Gomes was outstanding during his two seasons at Valencia, scoring nine times in 78 appearances for Los Che between 2014 and 2016.

Barcelona signed him in the summer of 2016, and he made 47 appearances during his first campaign at Camp Nou.

Gomes went public in admitting his struggles at Barcelona, and it was not a surprise when the Portuguese left ahead of the new season.

There is a serious, serious footballer in there somewhere, however, and a strong couple of months in an Everton shirt could lead to a number of clubs – bigger than the Toffees – making a move.

It remains to be seen whether Everton could convince Gomes to sign on a permanent deal, but the Merseyside outfit really should make a strong play for the 6ft 2in ace in January, as they might not get the chance this summer.
