Everton nearing £14m swoop for Digne

According to Mundo Deportivo, Everton are nearing a deal for Barcelona defender Lucas Digne, who could cost the Toffees as little as £14m.

What’s the story?

Everton are expected to kick off their summer spending with the £40m capture of Watford attacker Richarlison.

The Toffees will be extremely active over the next few weeks as head coach Marco Silva looks to put together a squad capable of challenging for a top-six spot in the Premier League next season.

The Merseyside club are certainly in the market for a new left-back due to the uncertainty surrounding the future of Leighton Baines.

And according to Mundo Deportivo, Digne could be moving to Goodison Park for £14m ahead of the 2018-19 campaign.

The 24-year-old – valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt – has made 46 appearances for Barcelona since a 2016 move from Paris Saint-Germain, but has struggled to displace Jordi Alba in the first team.

Would Digne be a good signing?

The full-back was not a part of the France squad that won the 2018 World Cup, but that says more about the strength of Les Bleus in the full-back areas than it does about Digne as a footballer.

The Frenchman impressed whilst on loan at Roma during the 2015-16 season, which led to Barcelona signing him in the summer of 2016.

Digne has appeared on 29 occasions in La Liga over the course of two seasons, but is very much the back-up to Alba at Camp Nou.

For £14m – or any figure near that to be honest – the deal is an absolute no-brainer for Everton, who will seemingly soon be securing the signature of Richarlison.

And the thought of Digne operating just behind Richarlison down the left will be an exciting thought for the Everton fans ahead of the 2018-19 campaign.

The Toffees have been frustrated in the transfer market thus far, but it could be a very exciting few weeks for the club’s supporters.
